WEIGHT AND ENERGY-DEPLETING FACTORS: STRESS
A special issue of Newsweek magazine in 2001 reported that "stress wreaks havoc on organs from the heart to the brain." Research indicates that when you are faced with a stressful situation or activity, in addition to the known mental negative effects of stress, a physiological phenomenon occurs: Your adrenal glands release a hormone called Cortisol. High Cortisol levels have been linked to triggering food cravings. Overweight individuals, especially those who carry the majority of their body fat in their midsections, as well as normal-weight individuals, who seem to carry a "spare tire" around their midsections, appear to have elevated levels of Cortisol in their bloodstreams.
Explore Your Past
Studies show that high levels of stress often occur in individuals who had traumatic childhood experiences. Are your past experiences affecting your present stress levels? High Cortisol levels and excess body weight go hand in hand. Come to terms with the past, eliminate the stress, lower your Cortisol levels, and watch your weight drop.
You will also minimize the risk of certain diseases associated with high levels of Cortisol, such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even depression. If you have any concerns about Cortisol, then consult your physician. Just know that the problem is not
Cortisol itself, but the manner in which you are dealing with stress.
Keep exploring your emotional relationship to food. How often do you think about food? Identify behaviors such as eating candy during a stressful afternoon with the kids, or breaking out the cookies when you get home from a tough day at work. If you can start to identify the emotional factors surrounding overeating, you will greatly increase your ability to flip.
